Cape Disappointment received its name from the trader John Meares, who, in 1788, was searching for the mouth of the Columbia River and gave up just a few miles too soon. Today, the Cape is a popular Washington state park, featuring lighthouses, towering cliffs, and the chilly Pacific Ocean.
