In the thin air over 13,000 feet above sea level the summit of Wheeler Peak - New Mexico's highest point - forms the southern extent of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The summit is high enough that there were still small pockets of snow on the northern slopes in early August when I hiked it. Many outsiders consider New Mexico to be nothing but a hot, flat wasteland. They clearly haven't been to New Mexico.
